Biography

|
Cathy Heno Suffel, formerly a Houston, Texas resident, became interested in art in her late twenties. Primarily a self taught artist, she has widened her knowledge by participating in formal art classes at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, (Glassell School of Art), Houston Baptist University, and the Art League of Houston.
Her education includes a Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas and a Masters of Education degree from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.
The unique collage paintings the artist is now creating have evolved through a culmination of the different media in which she has worked for the last thirty years. They include oils on canvas, acrylics on canvas, and different printmaking techniques. As a printmaker, she created original limited editions of serigraphs, collagraphs, and embossings.
The artist uses a variety of 100% rag, acid free, hand made and mould-made papers to create her collage paintings. The paper is soaked in water and embossed using intaglio plates Cathy has created. This gives the finished piece a highly textured, three dimensional look. The paper is then painted with different oil and acrylic solutions to attain the vibrant, unusual color combinations. Pastels are used as well. The embossed, painted paper is hand torn in different shapes and adhered onto a painted canvas.

Artist's Statement
Having been on a path of self-discovery my entire adult life, I find my work has always reflected my inward journey. As I have struggled, stretched and grown with life's challenges, my art work has taken on a wholeness and serenity that I feel only comes with many years of life experience.
My humble wish is that my collages will help depict to Women, the great strength and character that we each possess. It is time for Women to BLOSSOM! The Search of Women for Themselves has barely begun...
